museum was built in 1917 in traditional Khmer style and inaugurated in 1920 by King Sisowat. The National Museum houses the world's foremost collection of ancient Khmer archeological, religious, and artistic artifacts from the 4th to the 13th centuries. There are over 5000 pieces and is the repository of the Kingdom's cultural wealth. In addition, the roof space is home to the largest bat colony in the world living in an artificial structure. Every evening these bats flock out of the roof and swarm around in the sky before searching for food. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Photography is forbidden inside.

WAT PHNOM set on top of a tree-covered knoll 27m high, Wat Phnom is the only hill in town. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues of Buddha deposited here by the waters of the Mekong and discovered by a woman name Penh. The main entrance to Wat Phnom is via the grand eastern staircase, which is guarded by lions and naga (snake) balustrades.

Today, many people come here to pray for good luck and success in school exams or business affairs. When a petitioner's wish is granted, he or she returns to make the offering (such as a garland of jasmine flowers or bananas, of which the spirits are said to be especially fond) promised when the request was made. The Kingdom of Cambodia (for the various names of the country in Khmer, see naming section below) is a constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia with a population of more than 13 million people. A citizen of Cambodia is usually identified as Cambodian. Most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhists of Khmer extraction, but the country also has a substantial number of Cham and small hill tribes.
Cambodia is the successor state of the mighty Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries.
The country shares a border with Thailand to its west, with Laos to its north, with Vietnam to its east, and with the Gulf of Thailand to its south. The geography of Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong river (colloquial Khmer: Tonle Thom, i.e. "the great river") and the Tonle Sap (i.e. "the fresh water river"), an important source of fish.
The country has three main political parties: the Cambodian People's Party, FUNCINPEC and the Sam Rainsy Party. The Cambodian People's Party, which is led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, is the ruling party. In 2004, after a year of negotiations, a coalition between the Cambodian People's Party and the royalists' FUNCINPEC came to power in the National Assembly.

Every year in the ninth lunar month, the Khmer

people celebrate the Festival of the Dead, or Pchum Ben, a 15-day period to remember and honor and placate the spirits of their deceased ancestors. (See the accompanying article from The Cambodia Daily for a description of this year's celebration.)
This is very similar to the Western Christian tradition of All Souls Day on 2 November, and in a somewhat unusual move, the Vatican has approved for the Khmer church the celebration of All Souls Day on Dak Ben, the 15th day of the Festival of the Dead.

WATER FESTIVAL OF CAMBODIA

The second greatest celebration--after the Khmer New Year--in Cambodian culture is the annual water festival. Held in November, ostensibly it marks the time of the year when the Tonle Sap River reverses its direction and starts flowing back toward the Mekong River and the sea. The actual dates for the festival are set well in advance, however, because of the unpredictability of the end of the rainy season which is the cause of the river's reversal.

The festival is centered on the Mekong River at Phnom Penh, and approximately one million people migrate from the provinces to the capital for a real national celebration centered on the racing of about 400 boats representing teams and communities from all over the country.
